This week’s Sunday Stills challenge theme is ‘Lifted Spirits.’ See more offerings here.
It was uplifting to see this group of horses feeling in top form as they cavorted around a pasture off of old Saddle Road.

Lovely shot Graham!

Great shot Graham 🙂 are they wild horses? I did spot the Cattle Egret being nonchalant about the shenanigans going on around

No, not wild. I think they probably belong to one of the cattle ranches on the island. These days, paniolos (cowboys) use 4-wheelers to round up cattle, but horses are still used on rough terrain and other times too.

I blame it on the duck interloper! Great shot, Graham, I love horses! This made me giggle and lifted my spirits!

I wondered what you meant by that, but then I realized you’re talking about the cattle egret in the grass. Frankly, it was lucky it didn’t get trampled!

Great to catch the herd in mid-scuffle, Graham, expressing obvious objection to a subordinate’s bold and tasteless move :)) Mostly horse pics show grazing creatures devoid of personality — great insight to the pecking-ordered system they live by. Happy Easter! Dawn

Ah right, you would know what they were up to. Thanks for the info. This group is part of a larger herd and I went by them again a couple of days ago. Some were standing, but I’ve never seen so many horses lying down. An hour later when I returned, they were all up and about again. Happy Easter to you too Dawn.

Good observation! They only lay down when they feel safe to do so. Generally, one or more “sentinels” remain standing, on guard, to warn them of danger, should it approach. (They seem to feel vibrations through the ground should the sentinels feel the need to leap into fight or flight mode.) We had a solid week of overcast weather and daily SNOW, so today’s bright sky and sunshine is much welcomed here in our poised-for-spring forest!!! :))

Interesting about the horses. I’ve seen them lying down before, just not in such numbers. Glad the weather has brightened for you. When it’s nice out it makes life seem that much brighter.
