The tropical-looking bird of paradise plant (Strelitzia reginae) is actually a native of sub-tropical South Africa. But it certainly has the pizzazz of a tropical plant, especially when being visited by a colorful gold dust day gecko seeking to sup on the flower’s nectar.

What a gorgeous photo. The strelizia flowers are very familiar and a favourite, but those geckos are something else, and the combination is fabulous.

It’s a favorite combination so I have something of a collection of similar photos, but I doubt that wlll stop me from taking more.

If you don’t get too intrusive, the geckos will generally just keep on doing whatever it is they’re up to.

Thanks Brian. Over the years I’ve taken a number of similar photos, but I still look for this kind of image.

Thanks, Sandy. When they’re in bloom I check them out because they’re popular with geckos, birds and all kinds of bugs.

The flowers, and the plant itself, don’t last particularly long, but when they first bloom they’re gorgeous.

brilliant Graham, took me a few moments to realise it wasn’t coming out of the flower itself!

The flowers do have an abstract quality to them. They’re so strange and exotic that the gecko could be a part of them.
