As the sun sets on this strange, unhappy year, here’s a photo of a more tranquil sunset. The long, low island on the left is Kahoʻolawe, with Lānaʻi visible just to the right of it. The southern coast of Maui is on the right.

That is a lovely tranquil sunset. Like you, our New Year’s Eve was punctuated by the unpleasant explosions of fireworks. I have always felt curmudgeonly about fireworks and I worry about their harmful effects on animals and birds. And as you point out – there is the smoke too (to add to the vog!).
Despite all that – I hope the sunrise the next morning helped raise hopes for better times as this year progresses. Sending very best wishes.

Hawaiians love their fireworks! The last few years were not too bad, but this year people seemed to go all in. Lots of illegal fireworks too judging by the explosions. All the best to you too for the coming year.

They try to restrict their use here too, but it has limited success.
Thanks for the good wishes, Graham, and the same to you and yours.

Happy New Year to you too. Not quite so dreamy here tonight. Cloudy with fireworks going off already. I hope the trades hold so we don’t get smothered in fireworks smoke.
