A bromeliad filled with water

Many people collect plants, but some plants are collectors, too. On my last visit to Hawai’i Tropical Bioreserve & Garden it had recently rained. This bromeliad (above) and heliconia (below) had collected, not only water, but also an assortment of vegetation. There might even be a fish in there somewhere!

      Yes, that’s the downside of these plants. Any pools of water are mosquito havens. However, on that side of the island there’s so much rain, the mosquitos have numerous pools to choose from.

      They’re not carnivorous. It’s just their shapes make them prone to catching things falling from above or being blown around and, when it rains, they fill with water!
