Many people collect plants, but some plants are collectors, too. On my last visit to Hawai’i Tropical Bioreserve & Garden it had recently rained. This bromeliad (above) and heliconia (below) had collected, not only water, but also an assortment of vegetation. There might even be a fish in there somewhere!

Nice concept – and for sure bromeliads when grown here collect mosquito larvae!

Yes, that’s the downside of these plants. Any pools of water are mosquito havens. However, on that side of the island there’s so much rain, the mosquitos have numerous pools to choose from.

Spoiled for choice!

are they carnivorous plants or do they collect for other purposes?

They’re not carnivorous. It’s just their shapes make them prone to catching things falling from above or being blown around and, when it rains, they fill with water!

Hahaha. Great shots, Graham, if two of my favourite tropical plants.

I’m a fan of both too.
