
I saw this Erckel’s Francolin walking up an angled tree trunk on the side of Mauna Kea. It got to the spot in the top photo, had a look around, and then walked back down again. Francolins prefer to walk everywhere because, being game birds, they know that when they take wing, people try and shoot them.


What a fabulous bird Graham, well photographed too. Not ever heard of Francolins as a group either. Looks related to chickens or pheasants to me

They’re a game birds so in the realm of pheasants and quails etc.

A very noble name for a stately bird. I wonder if they used to fly more, once upon a time.

I suppose they did, but a lot of game birds have learned that staying on the ground is safer.
