The Numbers Game #24

The lava lake in Halema’uma’u Crater in April 2018. Two weeks later the lake had dropped 1,000 feet. Yesterday, Kilauea erupted again, but for just 12 hours before it was declared paused!

The idea of The Numbers Game is to enter a number into the search bar of your computer and then post a selection of the photos that turn up. This week’s number is 145. Captions are on the photos. You can see more responses here.

So many wonderful photos Graham. Love volcano photos mixed in with some nature does make for a so different collection.
Can do without a gnat swarm though

Beautiful once more. I can’t get my head around ‘erupting for only 12 hours’ . I suppose I only imagine erupting as spitting lava over long distances. The tourists will be flocking, no doubt. Your owl is fabulous, too.

Eruptions come in all shapes and sizes! The last eruption in this area lasted only 6 hours, so this was twice as long. No owls in this post. The bird is a native flycatcher and quite small!

Another excellent set, Graham. I don’t think I’d want to be close enough to capture that lava photo. I live 80 miles from a volcano and our water comes from and underground vein that is heated by it. I have to cool it down in a cistern to be able to use it. With the heat we’ve been having, I’ve had no cold water…Just hot and super hot. It melted the plastic “machinery” in one of my toilets so it no longer works..and for a few days I had no cold water to mix with the hot in the shower. Today I took a very fast shower using “cold” water only and it was still hotter than I normally like. The pool is too hot to get into and I’ve shut down the hot tub…Both advantages and disadvantages to having naturally hot volcanic water.

By and large, Kilauea is a well-behaved volcano. Once an eruption settles in, it’s usually possible to find good spots to view it, and the park is very good about setting this up. That’s ironic about your water being so hot. It’s not an issue here as far as I know. We do tap into the volcano for thermal power generation though.
