Tourists

A view of ʻAnaehoʻomalu Bay in Hawaii

A couple walks the beach at ʻAnaehoʻomalu Bay while a tour boat disembarks passengers into a glass bottom boat to be shuttled ashore. Tourism is down here this year, in part because many Canadians are avoiding the U.S.A due to less than friendly relations between the two countries at the current time. I won’t be surprised if other nationalities follow suit.

I have no interest in ever travelling to the US (mainland), but I don’t associate Hawaii as part of that. It’s more of a colonialised part of Polynesia to me. But how do Hawaiians see it? And also, are they still protesting ”tourists, go home” like they did after right the horrible fires a while ago? I’d love to visit Hawaii again, but I’m not sure if it’d be the same as our last visit (which was perfection – so my expectations are quite high!)

Anyway, the water looks lovely and I just dreamt of a boat with a see-through bottom last night. Weird coincidence!

Well, a segment of Hawaiians would like to see their sovereignty restored, but that seems unlikely to happen any time soon. Also, that movement thrives when everyone is against something, such as the new telescope on Mauna Kea, but it is less cohesive when it comes to agreeing what they want going forward.
The ‘tourists go home’ spell was directly linked to the fires and the tricky issue of not wanting tourists visiting traumatic fire-ravaged sites, but struggling with the loss of income from tourists.
If you had a perfect visit to Hawaii it will be hard to match that. Hawaii is not perfect, no place is. The water is not so pristine these days and the commerce of tourism has rather stretched the aloha spirit. But people still come and have a good time. It depends on one’s expectations.
