This week’s Sunday Stills challenge theme is ‘Bicycles and Biking.’ See more responses here. Yesterday, the Hawaii Ironman 70.3 race took place on the island so I went out to take photos of the cyclists as they went to and from Hawi.

The day was a hot and sunny with moderate trade winds, which meant the ride to Hawi was uphill and into the wind. The reward was turning around and zipping downhill with the wind at their backs.

That would be fun to photograph. These were fun.

It was. It’s been a few years since I’ve gone out for the event.

It’s been a few years since I last photographed the riders so it was fun to do so again.

Look at those action shots! You’ve done a great job. I’ve tried to capture the Tour Down under before, and had little luck. They go so fast.

They go a good deal slower coming up the hill than down! I usually pick spots with a background I like, then fire off bursts as they go by. There’s lots of duds, but a few turn out.

I can see the strain on the uphill sections riders body language. Great photos

It’s pretty tough riding up the hill into the wind, especially when it’s hot.

What great shots of the bike portion of the Ironman race, Graham. Stunning views and mishaps all at once!

It’s been a while since I took photos of the race. I felt sorry for the cyclist. That 6-mile stretch of road from Hawi to Mahukona is in terrible shape. I’m on high alert when I drive it.
