This month’s Sunday Stills Color Challenge is ‘Red.’ See more responses here. A variety of subjects for this one!
A Red Pencil Urchin in the shallows off Kohala. The red crest of one of the many chickens roaming free around here.A Northern Cardinal in a tree near the South Kona coast.A slide at a kid’s playground in Waimea.A large buoy on the beach at Kawaihae Harbor with an inter-island barge arriving in the background.
There are several kinds of cardinals established in Hawaii, including Northern Cardinals. They were brought here from the Eastern U.S. in 1929 and are well established now. We have them in our yard and they can be very loud in the morning!
I loved those. I really love the cardinal. I wish we had them here in the PNW.

I guess I hadn’t realized that they haven’t reached the PNW. They do add a good deal of volume to the morning chorus!

Whenever I am somewhere that has them, I love hearing their sound and recognize it immediately.

Thanks Brian. Not sure what happened to the chicken, but it moved on from here.

Such interesting and colorful reds, Graham! How the heck did you find a cardinal in Kona? Someone’s escaped pet?

That’s amazing and makes sense they were imported then. That’s the kind of noise I would enjoy hearing!
