This week’s Sunday Stills challenge theme is ‘Frosty.’ See more responses here.
I don’t see a lot of frost here in Hawaii, but the top of Mauna Kea is almost always cold. When I was up there last year, there was some snow on the ground and the freezing wind was whipping.

It’s much more comfortable to view the chilly scene from the warmth and comfort of the lowlands. Zooming in on my camera is close enough to the real thing!

Great view and photographs dear Graham, I can’t imagine myself there. Thank you, Love, nia

My blood has thinned out since I moved here!

It still boggles my mind there is snow in Hawaii. The great dichotomy of nature rages on.

It can snow year round on Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa as they’re both just below 14,000 feet high.

Great view Graham, love the cloud bank

The cloud bank is an indicator of why Mauna Kea is so good for astronomy. It’s above the cloud layer for 300+ days a year.

These days, they mostly operate the telescopes remotely from warm and comfy offices at lower levels!

The terrain’s very reminiscent of Serra da Estrella and the Observatory and ski slopes up there, Graham. I love that first shot.

No ski slopes here, though people do if there’s enough snow. It’s somewhat culturally insensitive to do so though.

Snow in Hawaii! Now that’s a rare sight. 😀

Actually, it’s not that rare. Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa are just under 14,000 feet high and it can, and does, snow any time of year!

Perfect post from you, Graham! One of the reasons I love the Big Island, is for its many climate zones! Beautiful shot!

Thanks Terri. I did have another idea, but wasn’t able to get the photo I wanted. Maybe next time.
