This week’s Sunday Stills challenge theme is ‘Colors of Lava and Black.’ See more responses here. I thought a collection of colorful lava fit the bill. These were taken on two of the trails in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, the Kau Desert Trail and the Puna Coast Trail.

Finally, some red lava erupting from Kilauea volcano. I posted a few days ago (here) about the pressurized situation at the volcano when I visited last week. This is a screen shot from one of the live webcams at Kilauea (here). This most recent eruption began a little after three yesterday morning and ended around 6 hours later. I missed it by a week!

How fascinating the variety of colours and patterns in the lava. And that live volcano erupting – wow! It must be spectacular to see. What does it sound like when erupting like that? I imagine it is pretty smelly too or not?

It is wonderful to see a volcano erupting, especially when it can be done quite safely. The viewing area is about a mile away so the noise is somewhat muted as is the smell, especially as the viewpoint is upwind of the active vents when the usual winds are blowing.

Great colours in the rocks and nothing beats the glow of hot lava. Thanks for those, Graham. As soon as I saw the topic, I wondered what you’d put in.

I was wowed by the variety of colors I found on those trails. I thought it would be all black and brown. I wish I’d been there to see the eruption but it’s a two hour drive from my place and it lasted less than six hours so one has to be lucky and quick.

The lava rocks are extraordinary, Graham! The eruption must be quite amazing to see in person! Great capture! Sorry, I couldn’t comment earlier by phone. I couldn’t log in, so I resorted to using my computer!

We’ll see what the volcano does, but I might try and see one of the next eruptions if the timing works out. With the old viewing area open again and the active vents being so high, I think it would be amazing too.

Not too terrifying. One can watch quite safely from a viewing area about a mile away.
