A View of Honokohau Harbor from the top road in Hawaii

On the Big Island, Mamalahoa Highway is known as the top road. It’s part of the original road around the island. In the 1970s, the stretch between Kaiwaihae and Kailua Kona was supplemented with a new highway along the coast, known as Queen Ka‘ahumanu Highway or Queen K Highway.

Mamalahoa Highway travels father inland, up on the slopes of Hualalai Volcano. When it get towards Kailua Kona, those slopes are steep. It’s a big residential area with spectacular views out towards Maui and the sunset. The downside of the location is that anyone living there needs to make sure the brakes on their vehicles are always in tiptop condition.

Puzzle bench

A bench outside a clinic in Hawaii

I saw this bench, one of several with a similar design, outside the waiting room featured in yesterday’s post. I wondered if there was some significance in the layout of the wooden pieces, but couldn’t find any. But I thought the design was both practical and attractive, even if the view wasn’t exactly the best.

Lost kid

A baby goat in a warehouse in Hawaii

I saw this little goat in a warehouse in Kona. It was a bit panicked by its situation and, when it tried to scamper off on the concrete floor, its feet just went back and forth like a cartoon animal. Eventually, it found its way outside again and disappeared.

The next big thing

A poster of surfer Chippa Wilson behind shopping trolleys in Hawaii

We’ve all seen surfers and surfing competitions. Ho hum. We’ve seen big wave surfers falling off 50-foot wave faces. Yawn. Well, here’s a glimpse of the next big thing. Surfing over shopping trolleys! This can only lead to surfing over cars and semi-trucks. What’s not to like! You heard it here first.
