Very interesting photos. I’ve never even heard about helmet urchins before. I love the dead tree shot.

Glad you liked them Andrea. The urchins are colorful and often seen in large groups on the rocks.

A great selection Graham. I love the Helmet Urchin, a first time seeing them for me. The intensity of Herons stalking always amuses.

I love watching herons. They seem fairly tolerant of observation and I’ve got some good photos of their activities. I like watching the urchins too, though they are a tad less demonstrative!

Your photo of the sea urchins is amazing.––as are the rocks with the ancient “writing.” Couldn’t read the description. Have they interpreted what they say? Love the position of mother and calf as well. All lovely images.

The urchins are amazing. They take quite a pounding but don’t budge! I think the petroglyphs have been fairly well deciphered. There’s more informtion at https://www.nps.gov/havo/learn/historyculture/puuloa.htm.

I read the article. Very interesting. Wish they’d shown more photos, though. I think your photo is more interesting than theirs..I take it they made the impressions when the lava was still a bit soft? Interesting about the umbilical cords.

The lava would have certainly cooled and be hard. They used harder lava rocks to chisel the images.
