The top of Mauna Kea is very “other worldy”. It’s a barren landscape dotted with gleaming high-tech telescopes.

I need to have more info on the game board! The hair decoration…wow! And, the descent to the green sand beach? I’m wondering if I could make it. Your posts always make me yearn for a third trip to Hawaii. I have relatives there and perhaps an old friend, so we’ll see.

The game board size is not fixed. Basically the bigger the board, the longer the game. It’s a traditional Hawaiian game, invented by them, with some similarities to checkers and go. However konane is a game where all the board spaces are filled at the start and then removed by the two players. The player who is unable to make a taking move is the loser. Gray skies, rain, and strong winds have shut things down and caused considerable flooding and other damage.
