Hula dancers perform in front of steps leading up to the statue of King Kamehameha in Kapaau, Hawaii
This week’s Sunday Stills challenge theme is ‘Stairs/Steps.’ See more responses here. Captions on the photos as usual.
Steps leading down to water.Steps that are underwater!Steps going nowhere.Steps over water at Liliuokalani Park in Hilo.Steps going up to water.Steps in a path alongside the ocean at Pu’ukohola.
Indeed. Yellow and red are big colors in Hawaii. King Kamehameha is clothed with yellow and red on his statue. In his day, those royal garments would have been made of bird feathers!
Lovely selection of steps. 🙂 I especially liked the yellow ones with the hula dancers and the bridge. Are the “steps to nowhere” part of some ancient ruins? Intriguing!
Thanks Debbie. The steps to nowhere are on a neighbor’s property. I assume there was a building there once upon a time. The house is set a bit farther back.
King Kamehameha was the first person to unite all the Hawaiian islands. He was born near here and every year the local community celebrates his birthday by draping huge leis on his statue. This photo was part of the ceremony one year.
These are great Graham. I like them all but really like the steps over the water

That looks like a nice walk by the ocean, Graham, and I like that bridge xx.

It is a nice walk there. Sadly, I don’t get down there nearly as often as I used to. The bridge is in a big park on the ocean front in Hilo.

Those yellow steps certainly grabbed my attention, Graham. What was going on in front of them? It looks very interesting.
But I do love the idea of underwater steps and steps that don’t go anywhere.

That sounds like a great way to celebrate a birthday. I had no idea the Hawaiian Islands had royalty, so I have learned something new.
Thank you for joining me again for Sunday Stills, Graham.

They had royal rulers until they were ousted in a U.S. backed takeover!

Thanks Susanne. That was taken on King Kamehameha Day a few years back.
