I spotted this mare and foal alongside Old Saddle Road and stopped to take photos. The foal wasn’t impressed and got to its feet in that ungainly way that foals do, still struggling to get control over those long limbs.
Once upright, the pair sauntered off out of range of my camera.
At Spencer Beach Park, there are several trees providing shade for beach goers. This picnic table sits beneath a False Kamani tree growing in the sandy beach.
The lovely blue color of this Walking Iris caught my eye when I was last at Hawai’i Tropical Bioreserve & Garden. Not only was it striking in its own right, but it was also a distinctive splash of color against a predominantly green background.

Late afternoon sun illuminates the beach at ʻAnaehoʻomalu Bay.
The appearance of Undulated Moray Eels can be quite varied. The yellow-green head is a common feature, and this black and white patterning is probably its most attractive look. They are, however, considered one of the nastier eels in the area and not to be messed with.
A couple of days ago, my wife called to alert me to the presence of this truck in Hawi, so I scurried over there and took some photos.
The message was on both sides of the board, but what was it there for? Were they upset with one of the stores, but which one? Was it a court ordered sign for a terrible driver? Was the truck several steps beyond a lemon? Was it a Google Street View vehicle?
If I still had my truck and the necessary materials to hand, I would have fashioned a similar board, painted a word on it, and parked it across the street. One option was ‘Good.’ Another was ‘Knievel.’
It was a mystery, but I’m happy to report that when I passed by later in the day, the evil had been driven out of Hawi.
This is a section of the path along the waterfront at Kaloko-Honokōhau National Historical Park. It’s easier walking than it looks, though sometimes bad weather can cause sections to become more of an adventure.
