I don’t ever quite get used to seeing cacti here, and I still have trouble accepting that they’re flowering plants!

I just think there’s something unreal about this. It looks like an arts installation or a Christmas decoration, rather than a plant. Not that I mentioned this at the time. It looks like it might respond badly.

I still find it strange to see cacti in Hawaii. Stranger still is seeing them in flower like this prickly pear cactus on the Kohala coast.

I saw this prickly pear cactus alongside Old Saddle Road and thought it a good illustration that affairs of the heart are not always smooth. I also thought this would make a good album cover for a country band whose biggest hit was a song titled ‘Prickly Heart.’ There must be one out there surely!
