A variety of photos this week, with captions on the photos.

Pohakuloa Training Area is a large military training area, occupying more than 100,000 acres on the lower slopes of Mauna Loa. Units from all around the country come here for training.
Recently, a series of jump operations were held over several days. As part of these exercises, formations of large aircraft were flying around the area, including over Hapuna, which is where I work.
On this day, the first flight went by while I was occupied, but when the next one came into view, I was ready with my camera. There were around 15 aircraft rumbling overhead at a relatively low altitude and I was pleased that their track took them past the half moon hanging in the sky.

The Sunday Stills Monthly Color Challenge theme is ‘Blue.’ See more responses here. After sorting through some photos, I found a cluster of abstract blues that I like so here they are.

The approach to Kona Airport passes over barren lava fields and I often feel for people who must look down from the plane and wonder what the heck happened to the beautiful, tropical Hawaii they were looking forward to visiting. I know I felt that way on my first visit.

I was going through some old photos when I came across this one and was struck by a couple of things. One was the dramatic clouds in the channel and over Maui. The other was how green the grass looks at Upolu Airport. Currently, it is uniformly baked brown owing to the lack of rainfall in this area.
This week’s Sunday Stills challenge theme is ‘Summer.’ See more responses here. Seemed like a beach-related theme worked for this. And at the beach…

The skydiving plane that operates out of Upolu Airport, has lately been making some lower level takeoffs. A couple of times I’ve been walking up from the coast, east of the runway, when the plane suddenly zoomed into view and whizzed over my head.
On the third occasion, I was ready for it and got this photo. In this case, it was the pigeon that was startled and made a sudden takeoff of its own.
