’Ilima flowers (Sida fallax) are native to Hawaii as well as other Pacific islands and China. In Hawaii the flowers are used in leis and highly regarded in Hawaiian culture. Butterflies like them a lot too.

Blackburn’s Blue Butterfly

I was hiking the Pu’u O’o Trail, off Saddle Road, when I saw this Blackburn’s Blue Butterfly (Udara blackburni). This butterfly is endemic and is also known as the Koa Butterfly since the Koa tree is its main host plant.

Hornworm Tachinid Fly

The Hornworm Tachinid Fly is considered a beneficial insect because it lays its eggs on caterpillars, which can decimate many varieties of plants. However, that also means it’s an enemy of Monarch Butterflies, which I don’t approve of, because it will do the same to their caterpillars.

Black Witch Moth

I spotted this Black Witch Moth resting on the underside of a large leaf. I like this photo for the clean line of the front of the wings and those big eyes.
