An itty-bitty Whitemouth Moray Eel

A Whitemouth Moray eel juvenile and red pencil urchin in the waters off Hawaii

This is the smallest Whitemouth Moray Eel I’ve seen here. It was in a hole in the rock high up in the water so I could get quite close. I’ve taken a lot of eel photos over the years and I thought, even as I took these photos, it would be ironic if this little eel shot out and was the first one to bite me. Happily, it remained where it was, next to a Red Pencil Urchin, which gives a sense of scale.

A school of fish in the waters off Hawaii

When I’m snorkeling, it’s always fun when a school of fish goes by. This one zipped by off of Mauna Lani. I’m not sure what they were. They went past too quickly.

Hawaiian Hogfish

Hawaiian Hogfish are members of the Wrasse family and endemic to Hawaii, though they get their name from a Caribbean relative with a snout like a pig! This fish is a female and probably a younger one, since adult fish tend to live in deeper water.

The name might not be complimentary, but I think the fish is striking, especially in good light.
