I saw this sign in Hawi. It’s on a side road leading to a local housing scheme. It won’t be seen by most people passing through the town, but reflects a degree of unease or unhappiness with how things are going in Hawaii, with housing issues being near the top of the list.
The old boat hoist at Mahukona has been replaced, though it’s not yet ready to handle boats apparently. But recently, two new signs appeared at the site.
The top one, advising swimmers to beware of boaters is OK, though it implies there are boaters out there, cruising the waters, searching for swimmers to run down. If those boaters exist, I’ve yet to encounter them.
The second sign was the one that caught my eye though. Beware of swimmers! What do they think we’re going to do? Bite a hole in the boat? Attach a mine? Reach a long arm over the side and drag the boater to a watery grave? I guess ‘Watch out for…’ was too many letters!
I think what these signs mean to say is ‘Park at your own risk!’
I saw this sign at a local church school. I understand what they’re getting at, but I confess I found this a bit creepy. I mean, I can’t think of anyone I’ve ever wanted to send a Valentine’s card to that I’ve also wanted to use a nail gun on.
But what if I really have to go?

State and county parks have quite a few restrictions regarding their use, but this sign illustrates that it might be better to plan on having brunch there, rather than breakfast!
My immediate response to this sign, at Lapakahi Historical Park, was to think, ‘You mean, before I fall in the water.’ In truth, the sign is there because the land to the right of it is no longer park property. I’m just not sure why they oriented the sign this way, but there’s a nice, simple bench next to the sign where one can contemplate the matter
