The Kaumana Trail, off Saddle Road, is only a mile or so long but passes through a fine array of ferns and other vegetation.

This week’s Sunday Stills challenge theme is ‘Feed the Birds.’ See more responses here.
Just the one photo this week, of a recent encounter at the island’s Costco. These Rosy-faced Lovebirds and others were snacking in the parking lot. I’m not sure whether someone threw this there or accidentally dropped a bag of seed or something similar. Either way, this was the only photo I got because every time I was ready to take another one, a car would come by and the birds would scatter!

Umauma stream runs into the ocean on the east side of the island, several miles north of Hilo. I’d never seen this stream, or the waterfalls on it, because I was always driving when going over the bridge, which gave this view. On this occasion, I stopped after crossing the bridge and walked back to take photos. The stream and falls were running strong because of recent heavy rainfall.
There are three falls on the stream, which can be viewed by visiting a botanical garden in that area. One of them is visible at the top of the photo, on the right. The water flowing in from the left side of the photo is a smaller subsidiary stream.

I was trying to get a photo of a turtle taking a breath – harder to get than dragonflies flying – but I liked the sparkles on the water I got by chance!

This week’s Sunday Stills challenge theme is ‘Storm.’ See more responses here.
I’ve gone with a few different kinds of storms starting with a Great Frigatebird or ʻIwa, which is known in Hawaii as a storm bird as they are considered indicators of approaching storms. Below is a rain storm in North Kohala on the road to Upolu.

The next two are scenes at Kawaihae port when the winds are whipping. A dirt storm above and a sand storm below.

A couple of Kalij Pheasants have moved into the neighborhood. They spend most of their time at the unoccupied property next door, but wander up into my yard on occasion. When I went out to take photos, this one beat a hasty retreat.
